Hospital waiting times

Waiting list times continue to be a challenge for hospitals as they recover from the disruption of services caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hospitals covering our area – Addenbrooke’s and Hinchingbrooke – are working hard to reduce the backlog for elective surgery, outpatient and specialist appointments.

However, the impact of this does mean waiting times are longer – for everyone.

For example, as at end July 2022 waiting times for patients to first appointment at Cambridge University Hospitals:

  • Cardiology – up to 64 weeks. However, the average wait is 30 weeks.
  • Gastroenterology – up to 16 weeks. However, the average wait is 7 weeks.
  • Paediatrics – up to 23 weeks. However, the average wait is 10 weeks.
  • Orthopaedics – up to 34 weeks. However, the average wait is 14 weeks.

We understand this uncertainty may cause additional distress and worry, but we’d like to reassure our referred patients, their hospital team will be in touch as soon as they are able.

In the meantime, you can access the latest waiting times via My Planned Care. This website gives you and your family crucial information about how long you may have to wait, helping to keep you better informed about your treatment plan.

My Planned Care also provides helpful details about how to manage pain, mental health, keeping healthy and access local support while you wait. It also offers hints and tips to help you and your family prepare for your appointment, operation or treatment.

Patients should note that St Mary’s Surgery has no direct access to the hospital waiting lists.
