St Mary’s Surgery building update by Dr Katrina Young, Senior Partner

Posted on:

We continue to make great progress with our building project and I was pleased to be able to show various members of the surgery team around the building recently and I heard only positive feedback following their visits. The staff are all very excited about getting back to 37 St Mary’s Street and we also look forward to welcoming back our current patients and new patients moving to the area who wish to register with us. Our practice area has just recently been expanded and now includes parts of Haddenham and Sutton but we are still waiting for the postcode checker for our catchment area to be updated by NHS England.

Following a meeting last week with our contractors, if everything continues to progress according to plan we should get the keys to the redeveloped building handed over to us by the close of play on Friday 31st March.

We will be extremely busy over that weekend so we can get our Dispensary established back at 37 St Mary’s Street for medications to be dispensed and collected from Monday 3rd April.

Unfortunately we have had an issue with the sub-contractor for the patient lifts to access the 1st and 2nd floors but we hope these will be fitted by the end of June. Until we can fully occupy the new building we will continue to operate from the portacabins at the Princess of Wales Hospital site but we hope also to use the ground floor of 37 St Mary’s Street. This will allow us to use an extra 7 clinical rooms to see patients face to face and 8 work stations for telephone and email consultations.

I would like to thank our contractor, SEH French Ltd, Gary Johns Architects and our Quantity Surveyor and Contracts Manager, David Haynes, for their continued hard work and support in this final push with this massive building project. I would also like to thank our colleagues at Cambridge Community Services for their continued understanding and flexibility in allowing us to remain at the POW site, whilst the work at 37 St Mary’s Street is completed.

As we will be operating from two sites in April, May and June I will give further updates in due course.
